Coolcation: As Summers Get Hotter, Europeans Are “Chasing the Cold”

How hot was Europe this summer? I was in southern France in July, walked outside for five minutes at noon, and my phone popped up a “heat warning.” A local friend told me: it used to be that summer meant Mediterranean beaches. Now summer means escaping to the Alps.

This trend has a name: Coolcation.

What Is a Coolcation?

Simply put: because summers are too hot, travelers actively choose cool destinations — mountains, Scandinavia, high-latitude regions — instead of traditional Mediterranean beaches.

Active Outdoors’ April report has telling numbers:

  • UK adventure/active travel is growing 13% annually, vs. 2-4% for general travel
  • 31% of UK travelers say climate is influencing their destination choices
  • Alpine regions are transforming from “winter ski resorts” into “year-round adventure hubs”

Backroads’ 2026 adventure travel trends report also highlights “less-visited islands” and “Lodge-to-Lodge Hiking” as the fastest-growing product types. Consumers are no longer clustering at popular beaches — they’re going where it’s cooler, less crowded, and closer to nature.

Why Now?

Several factors are converging:

1. Extreme weather is the new normal. European summer heatwaves aren’t “abnormal” anymore — they happen every year. Since 2022, 40°C+ summers in southern Europe have become standard, and consumers are voting with their feet.

2. Road trip flexibility. Coolcation and driving are a natural pair. No need to pre-book flights and hotels — drive toward wherever looks cool, stay an extra day if you like a place. Roof boxes, camping gear, portable coffee makers — these products’ growth ties directly to Coolcation.

3. The “slow travel” stacking effect. The slow travel trend I wrote about earlier fits perfectly with Coolcation. Spending a week in the mountains — hiking, reading, drinking local wine — is more appealing than three days baking on a beach.

Three Signals for Product Development

For travel and outdoor goods companies, Coolcation creates concrete opportunities:

1. All-weather, layering systems are growing.

Mountain weather changes fast — 5°C in the morning, 20°C at noon, rain in the afternoon. Consumers need “onion layering” — quick-dry base, warm mid-layer, windproof waterproof shell. Each layer must be light and packable. Colors like Pantone’s Cloud Dancer and WGSN’s Transformative Teal also photograph beautifully in mountain settings.

2. Car camping gear is exploding.

Not hardcore tent camping — “car camping”: sleeping in or next to the car, with a comfortable mattress, portable cookware, folding tables and chairs. The most common questions from European clients these past two years: “folding tables that fit in the trunk,” “portable car coffee makers.”

3. Sun protection and bug repellent become essentials.

High altitude means strong UV; forests mean mosquitoes. Sun-protection clothing, bug spray, wide-brim hats — once “optional,” now “must-bring.” And consumers want sun shirts that look good enough for everyday wear, not “obviously outdoor” styles.

Closing Thought

Last summer in Interlaken, Switzerland, I met a German couple in a converted van. They’d been driving around the Alps for three weeks. I asked why they didn’t go to the beach. The husband smiled: “Too hot there. Here you need a blanket at night.”

His wife added: “And no crowds.”

That’s when it hit me — Coolcation isn’t just “finding a cool place.” It’s an entire lifestyle choice: away from crowds, close to nature, setting your own pace.

If we product people can understand that psychology of escape, we can make things that truly resonate.
